Behind the active nature connection programming running year-round at White Pine lies a vibrant spiritual community dedicated to the support and preservation of traditional cultures and communities.
When our friend and mentor, Spokane song carrier Barry Moses first visited us in 2014, he looked long and hard at what we were doing and advised:
I see what you are doing here. The white pine is the tree of peace. That message is more urgent than ever. This tree is your community. It is nourished by 5 roots of connection:
- Connection to place- through the practice of wilderness knowledge and skill
- Connection to community- providing a safe place to be together in communion with nature
- Connection to ancestry- all of our ancestors were children of the earth, doing the inner tracking work to find the traditions and wisdom that guided each of our ancestral lineages
- Connection to self- doing the healing work that must be done so that we stop acting out as the wounded children we all are
- And the last is the most important… Connection to the traditional cultures of place- it is critical to nourish a growing connection to the Spokane, the Lakota, the San in Africa but especially the Miami here in Indiana.
These connections are never stagnant. These friendships are either growing or diminishing. If these roots are not watered, the tree will wither. If they are uneven, the tree won’t stand tall and strong.
Barry’s advice to us that day became the mission that has been driving us for the past two decades.
